Rinoa & Seifer: Love, Lust, Admiration?

Okay. This section totally proves why I'm a loser, considering that I sat home on a Friday night and wrote this while over-analyzing a video game instead of going out with other people like everyone normal at my age. Thus, if you think I'm obsessive freak and loser, I don't care. And if you analyzed my disturbed behavior enough and got that I was loser, you're probably an obsessive freakish stalker anyway. ¬¬;;

Anyways, I actually did sit around and contemplate this on a Friday night, 'cause I was bored and it just.. happened to spring into my mind. So I did kind of change my SeiferxRinoa previous-summer occurence opinion a litte (see old here) because I found a much more "deep" and plausible excuse for a lot of stuff that.. didn't really fit before. I wonder if Square actually means for their games to turn out so realistically.. or again, if it's me overanalyzing and drawing random conclusions out of the air? The world may never know. And since I've spent half a page writing completely off topic, I'm gonna beat myself madly with a large object and start talking about what I'm supposed to be talking about.

Rinoa and Seifer. Now, for some reason Rinoa and Seifer are kind of like Tifa and Aeris in the fact that hardly anybody likes both of them. It's either, you like Rinoa and think Seifer is a totally evil asshole, or you like Seifer and think Rinoa's a whiny whore. ¬¬ Which kind of makes me controversial in the fact that I actually do like both of them - yeah, I DO like Seifer, get over it. (And it's not just 'cause he's pretty ;D his character reallly intrigues me, too..) I don't think that Seifer is TOTALLY evil, and I also don't find Rinoa to be a whiny whore. Anyway.. The point is, I don't think something big out of the relationship between the two of them: I don't think it was Seifer using Rinoa because he's evil, or Rinoa using Seifer because she's slutty, or WHATEVER, because it's kind of a biased viewpoint. I do, however, think that the "relationship" in itself was not clearly defined between anyone, Rinoa or Seifer included. Because when Rinoa actually talks about Seifer, she sounds really confused and doesn't really know how she felt ("I.. I think I was in love.. I wonder how he felt?") or ever how HE felt, for that matter! So, whatever happened between them (and I'll leave the fun part of imagining what THAT could mean up to all of you :P since we really just don't know ;)) they never really discussed their feelings about it: they could've been just friends, or more, or whatever. And no one else seems to know, either that, or they're reluctant to speak up about it (Zone, Watts..) But here's more on what could have been, anyway.

As far as the last section I had on this topic, I just kind of assumed that it was a friends-only relationship because of what Rinoa said afterwards.. That she didn't know how she felt as if it was never discussed. But I was ignoring some important points in both Rinoa's and Seifer's characters. I can imagine Rinoa being infatuated and idolizing Seifer and thinking it was love. See, Rinoa tries to be strong. Rinoa wants to be strong. She tells this to Squall when they have the little talk outside Galbadia Garden. And Seifer is the epitome of strength and ambition. So I can easily see her idolizing him in some way, but not understanding her feelings (as it just seems a rather Rinoa-y thing to do for some reason ^_^) and being very confused and just assuming she liked him, even if she didn't. So, I take it back about the "friends" relationship, as it's still possible, but now there's always the thought that they were actually together, and THIS is why Rinoa was so confused about her feelings. (I'm such a dork.. :P) But I just have this visual image of Rinoa and Seifer talking and Seifer telling her about politics and stuff to go for her dreams and join the Forest Owls: "Just by talking to him, I felt like I could take on the world." ^_^ Maybe Seifer's the one who taught Rinoa to stand up for herself, and that's when she started really rebelling against her father anyway and left Deling City? I can see Seifer drawing out the more revolutionary and ambitious sides of one's personality. But that's just me. ^_-

Anyways, the only thing that made me rethink this in general was the thought that Seifer actually DID love Rinoa. It certainly looks like he could have. The attack on the TV station to help the Forest Owls? Introducing Rinoa to Cid? Seifer's pretty self-centered, so for him to break out of Balamb Garden's disciplinary room just to help Squall or world affairs.. Uh uh. No way. ^^;; He could have done it for himself, I guess, for the publicity, but.. I don't know, I really don't think it would have helped him in any way, it would have done more bad then good.. So, I think he probably did it for Rinoa, to protect Rinoa, or help Rinoa, or whatever. And what a better reason than that he loved her, or at least cared about her.. a lot. Either that, or he was trying to be hero again..

I suppose it's always a possibility that he liked Rinoa just because he got to play hero, Seifer being Seifer, of course. ^_~ Since his romantic dream was to be a sorceress's knight; while Rinoa wasn't a sorceress, she did need a knight's help at that point in time, and maybe that's why she appealed to him in the first place. But there's still that weird scene where Zell assumes that Rinoa's Seifer's girlfriend, and Seifer tells him to "Shut your damn mouth, chicken-wuss" or something to that extent. I never got that scene, and I still don't get it. =/ The only thing I can come up with for him to say that was he did love her and was like.. ashamed of it. O_o;; It doesn't seem like a totally un-Seifer thing to do, anyway, to be ashamed to actually love someone else. But whether it was love or infatuation or "romantic-dream-fulfillment," I suppose it's up to you. There's no clear evidence pointing to one side or the other.

I do think it's worth mentioning, however, that whether Seifer really loved her or not, I don't think they would have lasted anyway, regardless of time or Squall's impact on their relationship. Why? I just can't see them working out. Rinoa spent half the game on Squall's case because of how cold and uncaring he was to others - so I really, really don't think she could handle Seifer and his constant antagonism to just about everyone. O_o;; And because it would have nagged at her, she probably would have nagged to him about it, and he probably would NOT have liked that at all (unless, of course, he was with Rinoa because he really loved her, and then she might've meant enough to him to change.. but again, this is SEIFER, so.. :P). But, of course, Rinoa did only have good things to say about him, so perhaps he really was a better person around her? She does have that knack for bringing out the better in others.. a la Squall. ^_~ I guess aside from idolizing Seifer, she could've been with him because she wanted to change him. I don't really believe it, but it's always a possibilty, and it's worth pointing out. Or maybe it was really just a summer fling, and they were together for petty reasons and to increase their own egos.. Or, I suppose we'll never really know. And, since Rinoa ends up with Squall and Seifer ends up with < Fuujin / Selphie / Quistis / Zell / insert desired name here >, I guess it doesn't really matter.

Allright, so, the point here? Rinoa and Seifer could've been just friends. Rinoa and Seifer could've been more than just friends. And, if this was the case, it could have been for love - or it could have been because Rinoa idolized Seifer, and because Rinoa fit Seifer's romantic dream. But not only do we not know what really went on, it sounds as if they don't, either. And whatever the case, they probably wouldn't have lasted, regardless, because unless Rinoa could've really changed Seifer, she wouldn't have wanted to be with him, AND he wouldn't want her trying to change him unless he really did love her. Whew.. A lot to think about. This concludes it, because I'm SO confused. >_<
